What is a cover letter and do you need one?

A cover letter is a one-page business letter that is submitted alongside your resume when applying for a job. It is a piece of persuasive writing aimed at showing why you are the perfect fit for the role.

If your potential employer or institution specifically asks you for one, then yes, you should include it. However, it can still be a good idea to include one even if it’s not required, especially for high school students with limited experience. A cover letter lets you explain what doesn't fit on the resume and can provide additional information.

It is recommended that your resume and cover letter be in the same format.

Resume Format

The format should be visually appealing but not too busy, so it can be quickly scanned. On average, a recruiter will only look at your resume for 6-8 seconds. Make that time count!

Use strong action verbs on your resume to describe what you did, how you did it, and the outcome you achieved!
